Jane Campion made a film I didn't totally despise, that's the news flash that leads today's blog entry. The Power of the Dog is a post western farming film which is basically a spin on Rebecca, but a banjo-playing Benedict Cumberbatch plays Miss Danvers. Watching him gaslight and torment a poor woman who married into his broken family was oddly entertaining, but outside of that there were several moments that were incredibly on the nose. The film feels like it's boiling, reducing itself toward a breaking point, but that moment never manifests - it's a very understated film for sure but it needed something more in order to resonate by the end.
