Mystic River

Absolutely spell-binding performances were in Mystic River. I had never really seen Sean Penn in anything before (Tree of Life doesn't really count as he had about 8 lines in that film.) But I was blow away by his performance in particular. And the film itself was also pretty darn good, but after watching it I thought to myself, 'Wow, that ending was a bit lame.' Turns out that I'm not along with that thought as general consensus feels that the last 5 minutes should have probably been removed. But a good build up to a nice reveal with interesting and tormented characters make this film definitely worth a watch.
