Yeowling

Our cat was so happy to see us yesterday that she didn't want to leave our side... Literally. Rebecca and I had a tough time sleeping as the cat yeowled outside our door almost all night. I felt borderline jetlagged when I finally did get up properly and never quite shook the feeling.

We took the day off for the most part, plus a bit of New Year's prep for tomorrow. Our plan is a lil' cocktail night seeing as we have copious amounts of alcohol and because I received a lot of nice glasses for Christmas that would look good with a classy drink inside.

Bye Christmas Hols

I nursed a very small hangover with sips of water and pops of painkillers. All the whole I tapped away at my top games of the year article which is now ready to rock and roll... Just need Rebecca, proof reading extrodinaire to cast her eye over it before I put it into the world. We had lunch in London and soup in Newbury - we did our final batch of farewells before saying goodbye to the Christmas holidays. Still got New Year's to enjoy before reality returns.

Clash of the Families

There's often an awkward juggling act Rebecca and I need to do around this time in the Christmas holidays. The clash of the family events! We started off in Newbury with my Mum's side of the family, it was a significantly smaller shindig this year. No young cousins to talk to about Dr Who and Roblox, just the older crowd chatting about parking tickets and bypass operations.

The clock struck the hour and next thing I knew I was driving us up to London to spend some time with Rebecca's Uncle and Aunt. Her cousin brought her fiance along too, we got a wedding invite so a lot of the evening was spent learning about tasting sessions and venue selections. Plenty of warm family vibes from both gatherings, the one thing I've learnt is that I'm knackered from all the Christmas socializing. Tonight marks the final thing before I'm back in Bristol - Rebecca and I already can't wait to be sofa vegetables.

Su-Beer Combo Breaker

This was the perfect milling about day during Crimbo Limbo. I'm still beavering away at my best games of the year list that I like to do, and I helped Mum out with the annual jigsaw puzzle. But mostly I trained for Smash Bros as Su-Beer was tonight. Our often annual Smash Bros tournament was tonight so I lugged the trophy back to the event as a prize for the winner. The running joke is that I get to bring it back just so I can take it back home with me later. For about 10 years this has been the case, but regretfully I didn't defend my title this year. I handed the trophy over to the new champ, my living room shelf will look all the bearer for it. Now I have a mission... To win it back next year!

But it's not the winning and losing that matters, it's spending time with friends. Mark and Dan both went out of their way to come down for some games and that was such a treat. I'm very lucky to have such good chums.

Boxing Day 2023

Resited the urge to eat all the leftovers as we had family and friends to visit. A schlep to Tunbridge Wells to see some family friends who I haven't seen in a good long while came first. We took the dog out for a December stroll before returning to theirs for a lovely lunch... Or a 'Meaty Dinner' as they colloquially call the dish that was served up.

Then it was off to see Grandma in Orpington. I'm always blown away by the quantity of Christmas cards she gets each year, each of them with sincere warm wishes inside. We gave her our gifts and stayed a while for tea, my uncle, aunt and cousin dropped by briefly for a quick big family meetup - That's what Boxing Day is all about in my book.

Happy Christmas 2023

Grapefruit and gammon, the two staples of the Durrant Christmas breakfast were laid out on the table - the first feast of many. Our Ukrainian guests joined us once again for present unwrapping and for the big dinner. I don't actually remember eating that much at lunch but I struggled to eat anything else for the rest of the day so it must have filled a hole.

We retired to the living room afterwards for a film, Cyrano. As a historical musical it still felt apt for festive viewing, but calling in panto would be a grave disservice. Just a rock solid romance film with Peter Dinklage continuing to flex his acting chops. The sun had set at this point and I was terrified that we might end up watching the entirety of 'The UK's 50 Favourite Karaoke Songs'. We only saw 26 to 19 before turning over, somehow I'm more content not knowing.

I asked for cold, hard cash mostly this year as I'm in the process of upgrading my computer. But under the tree was also Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (a novel about gaming) plus a very nice spice rack which Rebecca will be equally thrilled to see.

Crimbo Limbo looms, that bizarre week where people's diet continues to consist of cheeses, leftovers and chocolates. We have an activity a day over the holidays so it was nice to catch a breather this afternoon and just veg out in the company of each other.

Hope everyone had a merry Christmas and got the day they deserved.

Christmas Eve 2023

Chopping salads, wrangling lights and brewing mulled wine, it was all hands on deck for the Christmas Eve Party Prep. Rebecca lent a helping hand before heading up to London (her car didn't break down this year so that's a big win already), we sad to see her go but I already hear her folks are enjoying my gifts to them all. The party this evening was initially marred by some late cancellations, but in reality the crowd we got was pretty good - but perhaps we over catered a tad as there's plenty of leftovers. No bother though, we'll put a dent in it tomorrow.

Nothing left to do but wait until Santa turns up to scatter the presents. I forgot to leave out a mince pie and some milk this year... And for a few years running now that I think about it! Hope everyone has a merry Christmas tomorrow!

Saturday 23 December 2023

Rushing around on the 23rd

Turns out, we forgot a teeny, tiny bit of gift buying so we high-tailed it to the high street for a final, final sweep. As is customary, we have arrived back in Newbury on the 23rd ready for a Christmas break with the family. No doubt we'll be put to work prepping food and decorating the house, but that's become part of the tradition now too so I don't mind it so much. We're officially in the big run up to Christmas Day now, barely 24 hours away.

Friday 22 December 2023

3 M's

With Rebecca joining me this week as a person of leisure we decided to inject a bit of culture into our day with a trip to the cinema. Anatomy of a Fall has been highly recommended by our friends (and likely to receive a smattering of Oscar nods) so we wanted to see what the fuss was about. Without question, we got a prestige foreign drama - it just carried itself in a classy way you don't see outside of Europe. It's a fairly intellectual courtroom film, in that a lot of characters say very eloquent things about the struggles of being in a failing marriage. I personally found the film a little spiritually wanting, but in the films defense its clinical approach to law keeping was the point and it was wholly successful in its endeavor. A film I respect immensely, but could never love.

In the evening we had Louis and Rachel round for presents and the 3 M's: Mulled Wine, Mince Pies and Muppets. I now can't remember the last year I didn't watch the Muppet Christmas Carol, a tradition for sure that signals the big day is just around the corner.

Thursday 21 December 2023

Champagne Bar

Alongside a few hundred others, we took a ride up to the giant shopping centre to score our last few presents. I forgot how much the mall experience adds to the Christmas vibe. There were a few cute displays around the place and shopping assistants wished people a merry Christmas left, right and center. It was charming to a point. There were a few too many people and I also learnt that Cribbs Causeway has a champagne bar in the middle of one of their stores. I also learnt I couldn't keep a straight face when I saw it and laughed a little too loud past the patrons at the absurdity of it all... It wasn't even midday and there were people on barstools on a Thursday!

We got all our gifts though, after we wrap them all up it'll be fully time to relax.

Wednesday 20 December 2023

Mince Pie Master

Left home with an empty rucksack, came home looking like Santa with a bulging backpack. Christmas shopping with Rebecca went better than we had hoped, round two tomorrow commences at the mall, no doubt it's going to be heaving with last minute shoppers, guess there's some humility to that.

In keeping with tradition we also made mince pies. After 4 years of totally bungling shirt crust pastry I decided that instead of doing the same thing again and hoping for the best, I re-educated myself at what to do. Long story short, I always overworked the dough in the past. This time however I treated it like radioactive waste, touching it only when absolutely necessary and the results speak for themselves. At last, I've cracked it.

Tuesday 19 December 2023

Logging off for 2023

Rebecca finished up her final day of work this year, logging off as I prepped some mince pie filling. Christmas is coming to our little home as the holiday break is becoming a firm reality. Though I've obviously been off work, I'm very much looking forward to having someone else to laze about with in the sofa next to the Christmas tree. We're doing the classic last minute North Street Christmas shuffle tomorrow, at least we have a pretty good idea of what we're doing though, plus her bonus is apparently buying us a little lunch out. Can't wait!

Monday 18 December 2023

Unknown Entities

I ran some odd jobs to kick off the week. Mostly running around for some last(ish) minute Christmas presents... Think that might end up being a theme for the rest of the week. At least I have a semblance of a game plan for the rest of the stuff, but I'm always little antsy until they're in my hands, ready to be wrapped - everything else is an unknown entity.

Sunday 17 December 2023

Dawn of the Nugget

Louis and Rachel wanted to have us over for a big end of year meal - when those guys are cooking how can we say no? Pork belly and and an Ottolenghi salad, it was excellent. We headed over a little after midday but stuck around til the early evening, sipping advocaat and playing Smash Bros.

We also tuned into the long awaited Chicken Run sequel: Dawn of the Nugget. And it was just ok. If anything it made me appreciate the original all the more, that film has themes, flawed characters and imagination. This sequel is tempered and much more scaled back in scope. The wit is dulled and the creativity is still there, but it just doesn't delight in the same way that Aardman is classically known for. Most noticable is the total personality shift of the leads, Rocky the Rooster in particular has apparently turned into a lame Homer Simpson. It missed the mark overall.

Saturday 16 December 2023

Leave The World Behind

Rebecca and I both independently went out for some drinks last night and paid a small price for it this morning. A bacon sandwich set us in the path of redemption though and after a few brain-off video games we were back on fighting form. Some fresh air was necessary though so we took a walk to Wapping Wharf for coffee and for some gift inspiration. Instead we stumbled upon a monsterously good deal in a reduced time clear section of an upmarket grocery store so we committed a daylight robbery.

We wanted to watch a film tonight so off the back of Rebecca's recommendation we saw Leave The World Behind, she vouched for the book so I was down. However the film was rough. So much so I felt compelled to write my first ever Letterboxd review on it:

A pretty rotten film. The tone can never tell if it wants to be stylish or taken seriously, and the key reason it doesn't get away with walking that tightrope is because the script loathes its characters. It tries so hard to sow seeds of distrust to build a mystery, but it's stretched out for so long that it loses all momentum. Once you start noticing the 'woah bro' cinematography and shallow theming, all hope is lost.

One More Meal Before Christmas

Committed to a little bit more scribbling before grabbing my bags for another social engagement with my old boss. I think he's only just noticed my penchant for explaining board games fairly well and has started inviting me to a few shindigs of his. I'm a goddamn roaming games library these days so I'm glad they're getting some use. It turned out to be an annual meetup he does with some of his best chums in Bristol so it was a great honour to sit at the table. Might be the last of my extravagant get togethers now before Christmas, meals like that just gets me more and more excited for the big day.

Thursday 14 December 2023

A Trip to The Dentist

It's been a long time since I found myself in a dentist's waiting room. So long in fact that I was embarrassed to write my estimated answer in the tiny questionnaire I was asked to do while I waited for my appointment. Over the last few days I noticed that it was suddenly painful for me to rest my jaw as I normally would. One of my front teeth is now butting up against some on my bottom row, gently, but uncomfortably pressing it and bending it back in a nasty way. So now my mouth has no 'default' position, I'm constantly inventing new ways to keep my teeth from touching while also relaxing my jaw. Enter the dentist. I was pleased to discover I remembered all the steps to the dance: get in chair, scooch to the far end, forget how far back the chair eventually tilts and constantly mistime my verbal communication to a moment when an implement is deep in my gob. The dentist didn't have to appraise me long before telling me that braces would be the best way forward. Luckily it sounds like no teeth require extraction, but the price tag and commitment is a lot to take in as I sit vulnerably on the reclining chaise lounge. Since there's no appointments to be made before the New Year, I will grin, bear and consider next steps.

Xmas Brainstorming

It's getting to Christmas crunch time and I still have a fair few names with no presents on my list. A quick brainstorming session usually helps but I'm drawing more blanks than usual this year. It saddens me because I really do love the feeling of nailing a present and then get excited at the thought of someone else receiving it. I don't want to phone in any gifts so I guess I gotta keep mulling it over until inspiration strikes. In the meantime I made cranberry sauce again which is always easier than I remember. I couldn't even wait for it to cool down before ha ing a brie and cranberry sandwich for lunch. Glad it tastes good because I end up with so much of it left, I'll likely be Hocking it around to all of my Christmas stops.

Out and About, and About

In my term of 'fun-employment' I at least like to be useful to the people around me. Rachel called upon me for another drive up to her new recording studio to drop off some final pieces before she was fully done with the setup. Then in the very early evening I went out with my old boss to the pub for some board games. I honestly lost complete track of time as the next time is checked my watch was quarter to midnight. In the run up to Christmas it's especially nice to spend time with good company and this evening was no exception. Just hope I'm still not feeling too 'jolly' tomorrow morning.

Monday 11 December 2023

Meet me in St Louis

Totally forgot the new Internet chap was coming at early o'clock this morning. I had to answer the door in my pyjamas and the guy looked me up and down as I rubbed the sleep from my eyes - thank goodness he had a loud knock! Thank goodness he sorted it all out too because, so far, our wifi feels much more stable. It's been causing no end of grief to Rebecca as she works from home, the shame of her running downstairs into the room with the router shall hopefully be no more!

In my endless quest to see all the Christmas films, we sat down to watch Meet Me in St Louis tonight. At least, 20% of it was Christmas, otherwise it was a slice of rich life in the Midwest, complete with a big house, snippy maids and kooky younger daughters. It didn't quite have the charm or magic I had hoped for and the plot/stakes didn't fully materialise until the halfway point. But the Technicolor look and the upbeat songs do make it bizarrely nostalgic.

Tree Fest 2023

Our traditional trip to Tree Fest this year included a few chums if ours who I thought would get a kick out of the event. Turns out my hunch was right - they loved it and all the wacky, original trees that came with it. I don't think there were any standouts this year but it's just another thing to help get me in the spirit of things. That and mulled wine of course, we were lucky enough to get the last goblet of the good stuff before they ran dry.

I had to drink and dash though as I had another social appointment at The Cube, a microplex cinema that screen some oldies. A friend said he was going to see The Night of the Hunter and I couldn't resist. Watching it again I was reminded of why I love it so much. The ethereal direction, the eerie silhouette of the murderous preacher and the frequently jaw dropping cinematography. I think I've only even seen the film alone so to share that moment with a few dozen others was such a wonderful way to spend 90 minutes.

Lethal Company

Played a few games with Mark and Dan this afternoon. We checked out a new one called Lethal Company which paired horror with comedy pretty neatly. A big nasty thing come come out of the shadows at any moment, but you can also blast an airhorn to make yourself feel better. We had fits of giggles in between heart palpations.

Tonight I did something a little different. A colleague of mine from Rivals invited me out to a short film festival, she helped work on one of them so I wanted to show my support but I ended up seeing all 7 of the shorts they put on. The theme was about place and memories, topics that often resonate with me and occasionally I found myself vibing with a few of the films. Glad I got to support a friend and do something outside my normal comfort zone.

Does Lightning Strike Twice?

I don't know why but I'm at the height of my productivity on Fridays. I'm working on writing another YouTube video and in-between pecking at a word document and doing bits of research I apparently clocked in 380 minutes of work time today according to my timekeeping app. I mostly continued writing a skeleton plus a 'vibe check' on the piece so I know where it's headed and what I want to say. Again, the topic is a little nebulous but I'm enjoying the challenge. I got a big uptick in my motivation once my latest video inexplicably garnered 11 thousand views since I posted it last week - easily my best engagement ever. Does lightning strike twice? Only one way to find out.

Once the timekeeping app was done for the day Rebecca and I took some time to celebrate the end of week. A pizza from our favorite joint and board games at the nearby Art Gallery were in order. The latter was an especially good night as just the right number of people with just the right skill levels all turned up. Heck, one chap even bought in his own game which we all playtested for him with glee. A super solid end to a week and a fab start to the weekend.

Thursday 7 December 2023

Desks for Days

My good deed of the day was driving Rachel up to a nearby furniture warehouse to pick up a desk. She's in the process of building a studio space in a nearby industrial estate, and the desk was the very first piece of the puzzle - glad to have been a part of it! Gave me flashbacks to this time last year setting up the office for Rivals, conjuring desks out of other bits of desks, thankfully this was much easier for all parties.

Otherwise I was at the writing desk with the cat, the cat who much prefers Rebecca's company it must be said. She'd rather yowl for her than play with me sometimes, one day I'll be the favourite.

Wednesday 6 December 2023

Zoom In, Hold Fast

If you zoomed into a small street in Bristol, you'd find me at my writers desk, feverishly taking notes while trying to craft some new material. I got in touch with a few TV contacts about potential work at the moment but folks are still holding fast u til the new year it seems. I'm keep my ear to the ground, but while I wait I might as well tinker away at personal projects - the kind you wish you had the time to work on, well now I finally do. And if the cat didn't hop onto my desk every few minutes I'd arguably get more done, but I wasn't exactly mad.

Tuesday 5 December 2023

Sim's Scrooge

Gracious, where is December going? The month is slipping through my fingers and I've barely even thought about gifts to buy people. At least I'm having this thought train now, usually I start panicking a week from now so I have plenty of time to pack a parachute for the inevitable buying jump. Some brainstorming today helped me get ahead of that curve but it had the unintentional side effect of making me feel festive. Keen to steep for a bit longer in that mood I corraled Rebecca into watching Scrooge from 1951 with me - the oldest adaptation of a Christmas Carol we've both seen. Aside from seemingly laying the groundwork for the visual flavour of future film adaptations, this one also has a handful of additions. Christmas Past was elaborated on, giving Scrooge more backstory. Usually I wouldn't get much out of this but the new stuff thankfully didn't feel laboured. It mostly served to change the dynamic between Scrooge and his Nephew which actually worked well. The text is ripe for adaptation and this was simultaneously faithful and refreshing. Just needed Kermit and then it would've been a classic.

Monday 4 December 2023

Down for a Downpour

A gloom hung over Bristol. Rain trickled down virtually all day, the day I was due to walk to the supermarket to get our shopping no less. About once a year though, normally in early December, I develop the urge to get soaked on a stroll. I reckon it reminds me of walking home from school as the Winter hours draw in and the sun sets way too early. I got predictably drenched but it didn't bother me, I headed up to a part of Bristol I don't head to much these days and got to appreciate it in the rain - I forget how much I love this city.

Sunday 3 December 2023

Traffic and Trees

The worst part about leaving our London chums is leaving them. Not only are they such generous and wholesome hosts, us departing marks the end of the weekend. Plus it means a lengthy drive home, exacerbated this time by traffic. At least there were some leftover mince pies to nosh on during the trip.

Our tree was decorated in earnest tonight. I think we came to the conclusion that we need a slightly longer chain of lights these days, but alas, Wilko has closed it's doors for good so replacements will need some more braincells to coordinate. We just wanted to veg out and bask in the majesty of a lovely tree tonight, which we did. All the little decorations came out again, each bespoke and carrying a story about it's acquisition. Some generic, some endearing, always with warmth though.

Another's Tree

Alarm went off at 6:30 for a porridge breakfast and a quick shower. We were due up in London for a Christmas hangout session with some London chums. I only regret not packing my Xmas jumper because today was filled with festive activities. Our friends hadn't brought their tree yet so they invited us along to buy theirs. I've never lugged someone else's tree up the high street, nor have I decorated anyone's tree but mine before but I feel so privileged to be invited to be a part of someone's Christmas tradition. We played board games in between the run up the the new Dr Who episode which was legit pretty good. Our friend was a big fan of the show growing up and he loved tonight's installment, it was classical and modern at the same time, hopefully a precursor for things to come.

Friday 1 December 2023

Early Tree

At the risk of looking like keen beans, during Rebecca's lunch break we took a drive to go get our Christmas tree. This is admittedly early even by my standards but our upcoming social calendar kinda made it necessary to go get it today. It came with perks though! No traffic, no people and first dibs on a decent tree. It's currently sitting in our living room doing the old 'droop out my branches' thing. We'll be in London til Sunday night when the tree will be ripe for decorating.

Thursday 30 November 2023

Chopping the Block

I'm on a mini quest to get my writing chops back so in between looking for new work I've been swaddled up at my desk doing some projects. Once again my attention leans towards doing my pithy end of year roundup for the best games I got around to playing this year. It's always a nice exercise as I'm basically writing elevator pitches for games, you need to be picky with what to include and how to sell your viewpoint with as few words as possible. I nailed one of them and made some great headway on a few others. Had I not woken up so late this morning on account of having 3 pints on a school night I would have smashed it even more.

Wednesday 29 November 2023

Board Games with the Old Boss

We did a double date of sorts in the evening with my old PM and his partner at a board game cafe. We bought in tickets for mulled wine and cookies (a festive starter pack) but we had the run of the place the whole time we were there. Which was great, because I did a couple of loud belly laughs while teaching them Skull and The Mind, two lil' board games that normally go down a treat but landed extra hard tonight with our crowd. Been little while since I did anything out in the town as well. If I'm behind honest with myself I think I've become a little introverted, I gotta get used to being with people that aren't Rebecca and the cat.

Tuesday 28 November 2023

Bye Bake Off

Made it my business to call up our internet provider to tell them I was thinking of ending things. Virgin have just been a bit naff as it turns out. A side-grade from PlusNet that never quite blew our socks off. They always give the company empathy the role of damage control when you're telling them your leaving. The softly spoken Scottish chap who tenderly asks if there's anything they can do that'll make you change you mind. It's not me, it's you I tell them. Upshot is we got new blood coming in soon™, another service provider, another agreeable startup deal for switching and more hopes that our wifi reaches the bathroom so I can watch YouTube on the toilet.

The Bake Off final was also tonight. Louis and Rachel swung by like clockwork as we shared the TV license to see the winner crowned. Always a little sad once our annual ritual comes to a close. I'll be putting my home baking skills on ice now (until I do mince pies again in December). As the Christmas ads begun pouring in during the breaks and bake off goes off air, then I know that Autumn has drawn to an end.

Monday 27 November 2023

Tactility and Transcendence

Suffered a few more technical setback than I wanted throughout the day before uploading my video. Progress bar monitoring was my primary function but we got there in the end. At last, my latest video, Tactility and Transcendence in Red Dead Redemption 2 has been unleashed to the world.

It started as a small idea back in December of 2020. The form and direction was iterated upon several times over the last 3 years as the scope and intangibility of the project grew. Marrying gameplay commentary, abstract time comments and John Ford into a script was a tall order but I think I managed to not sound entirely incoherent. Then actually cutting the video was a weird one as finding evocative footage to cover a 22 minute piece was trickier than I had anticipated.

BUT... I am very pleased with the final result and proudly I can share my Cowboy brainchild to the world. Here's a link to the video.

Sunday 26 November 2023

She's a Killer

During my early morning doom-scrolling session I went down a small rabbit hole for mods for a cat video game we played last year. Turns out a few fans have made it so you can change the colourations on the in-game cat, including a tortoise shell variant that looks not dissimilar to Edi.

I thought it was a quirky little thing, she's a very dear cat to Rebecca and me so it was a cute way to amp up the enjoyment of being a cat owner.

Then I went downstairs. I spotted a weird brownish patch on the carpet at the foot of the stairs where Edi was hovering. Oh great, she's been sick again. I continued downstairs and noticed a second patch. I rolled my eyes, but in the half-light of earlyish Winter mornings I only realized what the two patches were once I got closer.

One patcb was the half-carcus of an eviscerated mouse. The other was the entrails of said mouse.

Diligently, I strapped on some rubber gloves and inverted a carrier bag to scoop up the carrion. That was the rough end of the stick as Rebecca just had to use Vanish in the bloodstains. I never truly realized this but within their sphere, cats are apex predictors. I ate my breakfast in silence, occasionally shooting Edi a side eye as mulled over the dormant side of her I had never considered. I'd not really scooped up a properly dead thing like that before til today, whenever I recall it I lean into a domestic thousand years stare.

Suffice to say, I did not download the cat mod for the game. I'd rather lost my appetite.

Saturday 25 November 2023

Dr Who

Rebecca has been having a slightly stressful week at work so I wanted to try and make her Saturday extra easy going. I let her sleep in, I made her breakfast and we hung out for almost the whole day. Time flew as a result, so much so that I almost forgot to eat my lunch! It sure is nice getting to spend the day with your favorite person.

We saw the new Dr Who episode too which left me feeling ambivalent. Rebecca was a little offended by this, she holds a bit more reverie for the Doctor, while I enjoyed my time with it back in the day, but there's not a big room in my heart for the show. I'll try and watch the remaining two episodes of this anniversary thing, but I fear my feelings towards the show won't have changed by that time.

Friday 24 November 2023

Done and Dusted

I made a checklist of all the little things I had to do to polish off my video. A few hours later, I put a bow on it and even made the thumbnail. In fact, it's as good as live now, though I want to officially publish it next week when the Americans are done with their Thanksgiving break. Feels a bit odd now that it's done. I instinctively go to open my editing software, but there was no need. I could fine tune it within an inch of its life but it just needs to head out into the world to make friends.

Thursday 23 November 2023

My Biggest Fan and Critic

Aside from making myself a few cups of coffee, I spent 12 hours at my desk. All to serve the mighty video that's just around the corner. Literally, I showed the near-final cut to Rebecca this evening (she's my greatest fan and critic) so I just need to do some technical wizardry and a final pass then it'll be shipped off and sent into the world. Oh, and I need to make a thumbnail, get my Photoshop skills out to make something eye catching.

Wednesday 22 November 2023

Music Maketh

The lyre was used by ancient Greek storytellers to influence the mood of their yarn. Fast forward a millennia and now they are used in films and people's tiny YouTube projects. Music is like a cheat code to people's emotions, use the right track and you're on the highway to the soul. I'm chosing my tracks very carefully in my project right now so I can marry the tone of the writing with the flow of the video. It's also a prime excuse to throw in a cheeky montage which I love crafting.

The end is in sight now. More than anything else I'm just eager to reclaim about 300gb of hard drive space currently spent on gameplay clips of horse riding.

Tuesday 21 November 2023

Premiere Flourish

Knuckled down to a serious session of video editing. The new one is now approaching end game, just a few more building blocks of clips to chunk in then it's down to the fine tuning stage. I had a bit of wiggle room to do some of the slightly more fun parts of editing, I love doing little montage moments to break up the pacing and to signpost new points of the video. While it ain't rocket science, I've always considered myself to have a good internal barometer for how to cut to music and how long to stay on a clip. With those little flourishes in place I'll have a video that I'll be somewhat chuffed with. One thing is for sure though, I'm certainly not doing a near 20 minute video on a big budget, open world game over a three year gap again. I'll keep it simple next time thank you.

Monday 20 November 2023

Double Upgrade

Got my laptop back from its session in the shop. The screen got a lil crack in it but now it's as good as new! All that dust from half a dozen Production Trucks has finally been blown off my display, I can finally see things again. That wasn't my only upgrade either, I ordered a new power unit for my PC which I spent a bit of the evening installing. That's really more of an under the hood upgrade that doesn't do anything tangible in the moment, but it keeps my system healthy and happy. I'm still chuffed that I've become PC literate. I only had to briefly refer to a YouTube video on the subject, otherwise all my knowledge was in my brain already.

Kaputt Kettle

Woke up to the sound of something loud from the kitchen. Apparently Mum took it upon herself to make a cup of tea by taking our kettle and yanking the top off like a Greek God does to the head of an unenlightened mortal. 6 years that kettle served us but it bought the farm just in time for Black Friday at least. A replacement unit was bought and no harm was done.

Before mum fled the scene of the crime we took her up North Street to see the Sunday Market and to eat some pokebowls. I also got a haircut out of the deal. I hope she had a good little weekend in town with us - shame the weather always has other plans but we kept on smiling even in a downpour.

Real Life Mario(?)

Rounded up the family and hit the Totterdown Arts Trail early doors. So ahead of the game in fact we were one person's first customer. We hit all the old standbys and favourite venues, as Louis so aptly said at one point 'it feels like no time has passed since last year.' A little older I guess but everything else had stayed the same. I didn't end up buying anything this year as nothing jumped out at me, but it was nice to see the community come together for such a big event.

We cooked everyone a chicken skewer and couscous dinner, but not before a rouge knock on the door. It was my neighbor who delivered a call to action I couldn't resist. 'Please come quick, there's a water-related emergency in my house.' I stepped over the threshold into a waterlogged hallway. A water pipe from under the kitchen sink was spraying water. You'd like to think that years of playing as a virtual plumber would have prepared me for this moment, but sadly it was beyond my expertise. I spent 30 minutes getting hosed down by Maine water as I attempted to reconnect some pipes. It was all in vain though as there was nothing to be done until the water was shut off. Me and the neighbors' family all chipped in til the emergency plumber arrived. We found a bit of PVC piping and managed to route it into rapidly filling buckets. When the expert arrived I was stood down, all I could do is think how lucky we were to not have a problem like that... And how ridiculously wet my clothes had become.

She's on Her Way

Mum is coming down to visit Bristol tomorrow for the Totterdown Arts Trail so we did a bit of prep work for her stay. In between video editing there was a trip to the shops and a jaunt up to the board game night up the road. The owner also happens to be one of the key organizers for the arts trails so we got chatting about that and I got an early booklet too. We're really going to hit the ground running tomorrow - can't wait to support so local artists!

Rain or Run

I was feverishly checking my weather app this morning to figure out when was best for me to go on my run. The earlier the better was the consensus, so before my morning coffee I trotted around the park once again. The last run I did this week I felt great after, this time I just wanted to be sick. You have good ones and bad ones though, eventually they all turn into 'decent' ones.

I continued to beaver away at my video editing today. It's funny how all the hotkeys and tricks are coming back to me gradually. I am losing a bit of steam on it though as I'm hitting that big wall of self doubt. Just gotta surpress those emotions and get it into the world, otherwise it'll linger over me for years.

Goblin Wannabe

Went a little square eyed editing my latest video. I cut together all the voice over I did which usually gives me a ballpark of video length. We're looking at a near 20 minute final piece, might as well bea David Lean film at this point because that's quite an epic length by my standards.

Rebecca was due to go out with a friend of hers this evening so I was preparing to go full-on goblin mode at home. We're talking frozen pizza for dinner, no washing up and pyjamas at 6pm. But no, I had to stay dressed and make stuffed aubergine for supper. Being an adult is tough yo.

Tuesday 14 November 2023

Double Win

Set myself two tasks today:

1. Get started on my next video. As the script was done all that's left to do is record audio and splice together the footage. It's been a hot minute since I've done some voice over work so I was a little rusty speaking into the microphone. At one point I was contemplating using Rachel's infamous recording booth but I figured Rebecca's desk would work just as well. This script is easily my longest yet so getting it all in the can and cut together is going to take a bit of time. Still, I did the performative part of the process (which I often find the most stressful) so that's a win in my book.

2. Make sausage rolls. As part of our ongoing bake off tradition we are keeping with themed bakes around each week. It was party week so I wanted to make some finger food. Paul Hollywood has a video on sausage rolls so it seemed perfect. I caramelized onions and bought sausage meat this morning then assembled later on. I couldn't get over how impressive they looked out the oven, they tasted rather good too. Another win in my book.

Return to Homebrew Video

Did a bit of job browsing and signed myself up for a Facebook group full of 'my people's. I'm undergoing a rigorous vetting process because being a script supervisor is pretty exclusive business (?). I also got to work on what I reckon will be my next YouTube video. I think it's time to finally create the damn thing that I've had ruminating in my brain for 3 years. I've sat polishing the script for too long now and I just want it out of my life to a hopefully adoring audience. Realistically it'll only get a few hundred watches but at least I have made my mark on the world. It feels good to be putting my mind to something again though.

Sunday 12 November 2023

Spicy Fingernails

The Canadian maple syrup keeps on giving and played beautifully over the top of Rebecca's US style blueberry pancakes. While I could have eaten 2 dozen more of them, I never would have squeezed out of the house to do the Sunday Shuffle up North Street. We had a small shopping list this time for some more bespoke foods, top of my life was chili peppers. As a homemade Christmas gift for a few lucky people I thought I'd re-try my hand at making some hot sauce. I bought a half kilo of peppers from a nearby green grocer without much of a gauge in their heat so once I got home I did some spice sampling... That was a mistake. Another mistake was not wearing gloves while doing the prep with the chilies, I was too proud and now the underside of my fingernails haven't stopped tingling. Once they all got squeezed into the mason jar it all looks quite pretty, fingers crossed the end product isn't enough to kill a horse with spice.

Sodden Spaces

A fine layer of paint dust covered most of our home from top to bottom after a recent workman plied his trade. So we got to work and systematically went through every room and gave it a medium-deep clean. Opening kitchen cupboards to find mould on the outside of lots of bits is often disheartening, but this became a common factor for the day. Our dehumidifier does it's best but maybe we need some mould nuking spray bottle that kills it dead. Our home is a bit like a canvas tent at times, if anything touches a wall for too long it's borderline sodden.

Rebecca and I needed a treat afterwards so went out to a hand pulled noodle and soup place for dinner. It was very hearty and honest there, a chap in the back is always on show pulling and pounding noodles - might just be for show but it's a good vibe in there.

Seven Up!

I don't know why but I'd been putting off one film series off for years and years. Perhaps I didn't know when was a good time to start, but there's no time like the present. Seven Up! is the seminal British documentary series that will go on to span half a century for the subjects, all of whom are only children now, growing up roughhousing and dreaming of their futures. I'm already so eager to see the subsequent films just to see their trajectory through life and the unexpected hurdles they will likely encounter.

Otherwise today I played a short game called Monuments to Guilt - a digital museum you can freely explore dedicated to exploring the design if public benches. Specifically, how they are now built to be as unergonomic as possible, adding bumps and large arm rests to deter rough sleepers at the expense of our neighbourly attitudes to our fellow man. Good stuff basically.

Thursday 9 November 2023

Unmoored

With the weather being indecisive, so too was I today. I got plenty of outside the home errands done, took my laptop in for repairs and went to a retail park to get some bits and pieces. Rebecca got caught in the rain so while on my travels I went and scooped her up like the dutiful boyfriend I am. I'm feeling a little adrift at the moment as I haven't got my sights locked in anything big on the horizon. If nothing materialise soon I'll have to make up my own projects.

Wednesday 8 November 2023

Eyeline Oracle

My first day as a Scripty without any handrails. I dove into a short film about roads and traffic while giving hugs and handshakes to a few members of crew I worked alongside on Rivals. I always forget how important my role is sometimes, I was the oracle of eyelines as several members of crew, including the DOP and Director referred to me multiple times a day. I'm pretty confident I gave the correct advice in every instance and what we shot benefited from it. It helped massively that the cast were great and hit all their lines every time. I wrote up my report, sent an email and realized, that was all I had to do for the day. No baggage, no big prep for tomorrow, I just dropped my tools and left. Man, Production is a bit ropey when you think about it.

Tuesday 7 November 2023

Wet Legs

Did a wee bit more mental prep work for my big day as a Script Super tomorrow. I also took a peek at the weather forecast tomorrow which looked like the definition of grim. So I went out and bought myself some waterproof over-trousers which loads of people on set tend to wear. The more prepared I look and feel the better I'll be able to sell myself I reckon. Feeling good about tomorrow though, I think it will be a bit of fun. Alarm is set for early o'clock, let's do Wednesday!

Monday 6 November 2023

A Couple of Butterflies

Reacclimated myself with the role of Script Supervisor as I begun my prep work for Wednesday. I keep getting those kind of pre-job interview butterflies whenever I start to really think about what I need to do on the day. It will be totally fine I know, but I just want it to go well and leave a good impression. I got the script on my software now though which is half the battle, tomorrow I'll do the final re-treads and the. I'll be waking up nice and early for the fun. I don't miss the early mornings I can tell you that for free.

Sunday 5 November 2023

Bonfire '23

I like to use the 'Rebecca out of town's days to catch up on black and white movies and video games. That was my morning before the supermarkets opened up, then it was back to chores and weekly shopping. We had Louis and Rachel round for another glimpse at the Victoria Park bonfire which always burns bigger than I remember. We put Classic FM on for the cat and that seemed to get her through the fireworks... She's going to have better music taste than me if people keep the pyrotechnics up for much longer tonight.

Saturday 4 November 2023

Vampire Survivors

A workman popped round this morning to install our new radiator, which is also the final piece of the puzzle for our hallway renovations for the year. Hurray!

So I spent a few hours this morning huddled in a room with the cat but still making myself available to the chap in case he had questions. I was browsing the app store on my iPad and spotted they had the game that won last year's BAFTA for best game. Vampire Survivors is exactly what I expected it to be. A dopamine drip pipe where you watch numbers go up as screens of bad guys disintegrate thanks to your holy weaponry. I got to a point with it today though where I unlocked so many power ups that I literally just left the game running and did the washing up. I came back 10 minutes later as the game played itself - all the attacks happen automatically so minimal input is required from the player. I had a horrible epitome. What the hell was I doing with my life? I was watching a game play itself. I'm actually rendered speechless when I remember it's a BAFTA winning title, every person who included it in their end of year review write up boasted about how many hours they sank into it. You can't just guild a time killer app to justify your how you spent your existence on watching tiny numbers go up and enemies melt. No one in their deathbed will say, 'Damn, I wish I played more Vampire Survivors'. I just feel embarrassed of ever having played it now.

A Fine Writing Desk

Despite our decorator flaunting his 'dust free power sander', I found every surface in the dining room had a fine layer of Timeless™ dust over everything. This served as a good excuse to reclaim my writing desk that has previously been my dumping ground for work - old paperwork, holepunchers, broken pens... You name it, it was there. I paired it all down and sat there again to get a feel for using that space for work and remembered why I still have fond lockdown memories of doing personal projects there. Come Monday, I'll be there doing bits and pieces to nurture my soul.

Thursday 2 November 2023

Protect the Paint

Our decorator finished up in our hallway today and it looks great now! No more salmon pink from the render, it just looks like a nice, normal space now that's so much lighter. No doubt I'll act extra careful around the space for the next few days in fear of scuffing it but we can't be too precious in this life.

I met up with my old Production Manager for a few games around his house on the river. The storm recently meant that it's close to flooding down there, shame because he's now the co owner of a boat and I'm keen to take it for a spin. Was great to catch up with him though and get a sense on how he's been doing since Rivals finished.

Wednesday 1 November 2023

Hot Pizza

Spruced up the old CV today, adding in all the relevant bits from Rivals and made myself sound more like a dreaming Script Supervisor. I did this in between making batches of pizza sauce for our guest tonight. I made the first load of it and tested it on a piece of bread to create a poor man's pizza - it was super tasty but I was heavy handed with the chili flakes so I whipped up some more without the spice. It was all for nought though, when it came to making my custom pizza I got greedy and overloaded it with sauce! Let that be a lesson, less it more when it comes to toppings sometimes...

Tuesday 31 October 2023

Happy Halloween 2023

Shook hands with our decorator and got comfy with the cat on the sofa. Literally no one wants a little feline running around near wet paint so I kept her in the cat creche of our living room while I pottered around. I returned my attention to a YouTube video script I finished writing last year that I wanted to sharpen ever so slightly, to do that I had to do some reading into the director John Ford. I found a book about him that I wanted to start reading, even after I found the quote I wanted I continued reading, always the sign of a good book.

The code around my parts on Halloween is Tricky or Treaters will only knock on your door if you put a pumpkin out. I lit up a candle and filled up my tub with Haribo ready to hand it all out. Rebecca thought I wouldn't get any takers but the kids rinsed me out in 20 minutes! I had to hurriedly bring my pumpkin back inside and turn off all the houselights in shame. I wish I was a kid again. Free chocolate in this economy is a sweet deal.

Monday 30 October 2023

Poorly Kitty

While Rebecca was a busy bee working form home I filled my day with a few eBay and Facebook marketplace listings to weed through some of our floating bits and bobs. Also, I was a nurse for our cat who decided to be a little bit sick in the house. I'm going to be in cat duty a fair amount this week as we have a decorator coming in to to our hallways and landing. Just me and Edi doing personal projects and making brews for a man in overalls.

Sunday 29 October 2023

To Peel a Pumpkin

We successfully smuggled some bonafide maple syrup out of Canada so it felt right to rustle up some pancakes this morning. The syrup was damn good, but I won't be making the trip out there again just for a small bottle - I bet this is what the Irish say about Guinness not tasting the same outside of Dublin but we all know the truth.

Pumpkins dictated the rest of the day. Rebecca wanted to make her October cupcakes - the key ingredient being everyone's favourite orange gourd. Mum transferred the design I wanted into my pumpkin yesterday so I got to work on carving, plus peeling. That's right, for the first time I attempted a hybrid technique to create my look this year. Instead of sawing all the way through the flesh, you just take a knife and peel off the thick skin. It sounds like a faff, and with a 12 year old pairing knife it admittedly could have been easier, but the process was fun and the results were much better than I had expected.

My design this year was based on a character in a board game who aptly is carving a pumpkin. I think it looks mighty fine in the dark. The extra lines in the face really sell the look.

Family Out West

Spruced up the homestead for a visit from my Mum and Dad. They hadn't made the trip out west for a little while and it was great to see them and offer some of our hospitality. We exchanged a few gifts from our travels, I got some very fancy Turkish coffee while we passed on a small Christmas decoration from Canada. Louis joined in for a pub lunch on North Street from a place that actually gets better every time I go back. I think it was a hit anyway!

Once my folks hit the road I was on nursing duty. Rebecca caught my cold by the sounds of things and needs some love and attention. You always feel guilty giving someone a cold, just glad it wasn't covid!

Friday 27 October 2023

Buddy Horror

Mark get Fridays off so it felt right to invite him over for some spooky games. I put him through a deeply unsettling part of a horror game I recently enjoyed, although terrifying I think it's a horror moment that we could both appreciate in its construction. I always forget how much I love just hanging out on a sofa playing games with people while shooting the breeze, reminded me of our uni days hanging out in Frederica. Rebecca joined us later for some card and dice games, we got deep into a cooperative one call the Crew which had us all holding our breath right until the winning moments - there were a lot of imaginary high fives going around tonight which is what Friday evenings are all about.

Thursday 26 October 2023

Killers of the Flower Moon

Signed myself up for an grand cinema excursion with some old coworkers to go see Killers of the Flower Moon. Another Scorsese epic about the true crime that Americans inflicted upon their own people. It delved into a chapter of history I had totally no knowledge of which I found fascinating and the slow burn of watching people systematically murder another race is exponentially horrifying the more you think about it. Performances were excellent too, Leo spends most of the time pretending to listen and understand what everyone else is saying. It's quite an emasculating role and he always has a face of vacant determination - I frequently asked myself 'what must he be thinking now' and the answer is always 'nothing'.

But all told, the film is still far too long. Scenes come and go and we only glean scraps about characters and motivation - sure but all builds a grand mosaic once we get to the finish line but it certainly likes to relish in the pace of the old life. Right at the three hour mark the lady two seats over from me started to breathe heavily, then snore quietly, then snore loudly. The runtime is justified by the scale of the source material, which is legitimately important and respectfully told. If you got a good few hours to kill, this is a good one to try out.

Wednesday 25 October 2023

The Innocents

I promise this blog won't become a beat by beat recalling of how I overcome jetlag and a cold, but by golly those two things have almost dictates my life for the past few days. I just want to do more Halloween stuff mostly, get into the cosy Autumn mindset and scare myself a little. That's at least what Rebecca and I did this evening by watching The Innocents. There was a perfect era of horror in the early 60's, plenty of quality ghost stories and haunted houses with oodles of nuance in the way they built fear. This film is yet another stone cold chiller of it's time where a woman walks through a literally pitch black corridor clutching a candelabra and things go bump in the night. You also personally discover that the hairs in the back of your neck also have their own hairs that stand on end when spooked. Just hope the ghosts don't keep me up tonight now...

Tuesday 24 October 2023

Sleep = Reset

I relinquished myself to the sleep my body was so desperately crying out for last night and woke up at a rather embarrassingly late time. Still, I tried to have an easy but productive day so I finished the new Mario game, went on a run and watched a film (Mind Game, a bizarre Japanese animation film which mostly successfully did the crude, but life affirming trick the Swiss Army Man pulls off.) We settled into our Bake Off evening again with Louis and Rachel, and all was right in the world once again.

Monday 23 October 2023

Cinnamon Conundrum

Though my suspected cold didn't develop into anything worse, it did keep me up for a large chuck of last night. When you have a touch of jet lag that's double trouble.

Somewhat inspired by the autumnal flavours of Canadian sweet treats, I made a batch of cinnamon buns. I did these last year as well and I remember them not coming out quite as well as I had dreamed. I couldn't recall why exactly, but I remember having a vague feeling of unease whenever I thought about them. You always hope that the next time you bake something you'll learn from your mistakes, well this time around I think I made all the same pitfalls again. Bad yeast, odd dough rolling and forgetting to use greaseproof paper were all silly things that I'll try and internalize for next year. Dispute it all, they still taste chuffing good so it's a net positive.

Sunday 22 October 2023

Catch a Flight, Catch a Cold

I don't want to jynx it, but I think the jet lag may have gone...

But in a twist of fate I now think someone, somewhere on the plane had a cold because I have some symptoms brewing right now. Not enough to be in discomfort, nor is it bad enough to blame on why I lost at board games against Rebecca, but knowing there might be something on the way certainly puts a dampener on the rest day.  Speaking of, Rebecca slept in til 10am today, that'll be a shock to her system tomorrow when she's up for work tomorrow. All I'll be doing is kneading out cinnamon buns in my pyjamas.

Saturday 21 October 2023

How to Beat Jet Lag

My technique to getting past jet lag is to just white knuckle it until the sun goes down. I caught a few winks on the plane but not enough to get me through the day - I'm honestly surprised I'm still functioning at the moment. The moment my head touches that pillow I'll be out cold for hours... And I cannot wait.

Dreaming of Canada

Sat in the departures lounge now contemplating our last day in Canada. We headed up Mount Royal in the heart of Montreal to be amidst the trees for the last time. Within the last two weeks you can really tell how much the leaves have changed colour, everyday the wind shakes more of them down to earth, but exactly now, in the middle of October, is the perfect time to see them all.

We've done it all this holiday. Witnessed unofficial wonders of the natural world and eaten unnatural amounts of pastries/bagels. We drank at bars we'll soon forget the names of and hiked trails a thousand others have trod before us. We've seen men brawling on the ice and we've shared cosy dinners amongst family. It's been the most remarkable trip, one I won't soon forget. Best of all I got to share it all with Rebecca who made my first trip across the Atlantic all the more special.

Friday 20 October 2023

City of Bagels

Like a starting pistol, the moment we got up we hit the streets to explore Montreal. A city that's famous for it's bagels, it'd be rude not to have some for breakfast - somehow just one sustained me for 10 hours (not even joking, I ate nothing else til dinner!). We did a TON of walking today as it turns out the city is pretty damn big. We saw the old town, the underground shopping malls and even the Barbie Expo which was better than it had any right to be.

We were recommended a thrift store last week so we walked for almost an hour to see if we could do some bargain hunting. I struck gold with a lovely thick shirt, looking the make up once we got back we discovered I made a 92% saving on it. Much later we went out to a very new and trendy burger place. After wiping away a blob of mayonnaise off her cheek Rebecca whispered 'I think that might be the best burger I've ever had', I'd be inclined to agree.

Since we got an evening flight out tomorrow we have one more day in Canada. So much to do, so many more Tim Horton's pastries to sample and so many maple flavored biscuits to hopefully squeeze into our luggage.

Thursday 19 October 2023

Let's Go Rockets

It was time to say Au Revoir to Quebec City and Bonjoir to Montreal. It also marked the final long-haul train journey of the trip which are low-key some of my favourite parts. We checked into our last Air BnB too, we got the heads up yesterday that the room was on the 21st floor... And it was indeed on the 21st floor! Our balcony overlooked the city and all the promise it holds.

But before we could explore, we had an appointment to keep with an ice hockey game. Riding the metro to the stadium it dawned on Rebecca and me that nether of us had been to a proper sports game before. It was a hell of a thing climbing the steps and finding our seats amidst a huge arena to see a huge ice rink and a couple thousand fans all ready to watch their home team defend their turf. Rebecca and I watched a YouTube video only last night to learn an abridged version of the rules, but 20 minutes in as I ate poutine and Timbits™ while washing it down with a light beer, ice hockey became second nature. We had an absolutely tremendous time cheering on the Rockets. There was impromptu Mexican waves while fisticuffs occured out on the ice, then whenever the home team scored the cheers could have woken the dead. Our game went into overtime after a tense back and forth but we conceeded the last goal and all the hype burst in an instant. Pity we didn't win, but it was riotous fun.

487 Steps

The #2 top rated thing to do in Quebec City isn't really in the concrete jungle, it's just on the outskirts after a bus takes you to the end of the line. Mortmorency Falls sounds like a poor man's Niagara on paper, but in reality it's almost just as impressive. A very agreeable entrance fee grants access to a spectacular patch of woodland and half a dozen viewing platforms for a mesmerizing waterfall. There was even a dedicated 'get wet here zone' where the mist from the falls would drench you in seconds... So if course we did that! It was a long climb back up to the top though, 487 steps to be exact, but totally worth it for one of the most memorable parts of our holiday.

Just opposite this site of outstanding natural beauty was a McDonald's. My first North American taste of the golden arches was only a coffee and a muffin, had to be done at some point though during our visit.

Tuesday 17 October 2023

Halloween Country

Recharging our batteries was the goal of today. We had a very lazy get up time and visited Quebec's old town once again, but most of all we kept it easy breezy. I always forget how seriously North Americans take Halloween, most commercial areas are brimming with pumpkins and life-size dioramas of spooky scenes. Makes me excited to carve my own pumpkin when I get back.

We were a but more active this evening, taking a jaunt to a ramen place, a bar and a board game pub. It still not in my nature to give tips but hey-ho, I'm in holiday.

Monday 16 October 2023

Poutine

Full day in Quebec City! Since we're here for a longer spell we went grocery shopping to get breakfast lunches and dinners (again, a great excuse to see North American supermarkets). A breakfast bagel set us up for a day of leisurely sightseeing around the old town, we went up a boardwalk with 310 steps to admire the views from on high.

The city is awash with microbreweries we discovered... Which is great news for me, especially when there's stouts on tap. We took this opportunity to try a national delicacy: Poutine. I actually couldn't fathom why this hasn't trickled into British pubs. It's chips, gravy and cheese curds and it's jolly good too. It's already better than the best cheesey chips out there, so why hasn't it taken off much outside of Canada? Perhaps this'll be my new business venture.

Sunday 15 October 2023

Eastward Ho!

No photos today because we mostly caught a 6 hour train to our next city destination: Quebec City. Before hopping onto the train we found ourselves with a bit of free time, enough to check out a big North American staple: WallMart. I love foreign supermarkets and this place is the definition of excess - good place to get train snacks though! Once in Quebec we unloaded our bags at our Air B&B and set off to a microbrewery down the road that also happened to be cat themed... The dream spot for me and Rebecca basically. We'll explore the city fully tomorrow, but it turns out that riding a train for half a day really knocks it out of you.

Saturday 14 October 2023

24 Hours in Ottawa

We returned to last night's jazz bar as it's trendy oatmeal spot by day. A banana and date porridge set me up for doing oodles of sightseeing around Ottawa's parliament hill and other government buildings - all of which were stunning, especially since they're all situated atop lakeside hills. Our guidebook also informed us that the local delicacy was a treat called Beavertails, basically and open turnover pastry dusted with cinnamon sugar and then topped with whatever your heart desires. We found out later that Ex president Obama visited the same kiosk as us which made me feel a lot better after eating 500+ calories of deep fried sugar. A customary trip to a used bookstore plus a coffee house was our little pitstop before checking out the city's cathedral and signiture outdoor art exhibit... Of a giant spider... I wasn't a fan.

Since our Air B&B was right next to Little Italy it would have been a sin not to get some pizza there for dinner. Back in bed I'm already looking back on our 24 hours in Ottawa with a smile. Before our trip I was anecdotally informed the capital was a woefully boring city. My eyes have drank up most of what the city can offer for sure, but it's a darnsight nicer than I was lead to believe.

Friday 13 October 2023

Arrival in Ottawa

It was mostly a travel day for us. We took the cross country equivalent from Toronto out East to the capital, Ottawa. The train was just shy of 5 hours so we were pooped once we got into town. We checked into our Air B&B and then headed out for food and fun. The breakfast place we were looking at tomorrow also apparently turns into a whiskey and jazz lounge in the evenings, so we had cocktails (an old fashioned to be exact) and listened to some really cool live music. Cheers to you Ottawa.

Thursday 12 October 2023

Niagara Falls

We embarked our pre-booked (as of yesterday) tour bus out to the region of Niagara at the ripe old time of 8:15am. Our guide was keen to inject a bit of energy into our group right from the get-go but sensed that most of us were still waking up. Our first stop was the colonial town of Niagara-On-The-Lake, where every Canadian wishes they could go retire to. It was a really cute town, worthy of a one hour whistle stop tour as we headed out to the main attraction: the falls.

So often people say this is an easy 10/10 experience and I can only parrot that sentiment because it was breathtaking. Seeing and hearing that force of nature was simply remarkable, made all the more awe-inspiring when we got on the boat tour. We slapped on our complimentary poncho and braced ourselves for a soaking. We left the falls still a little soggy, but full of warm memories. It probably hasn't registered just yet, but Niagara was a once in a lifetime experience.

Touring Toronto

Rebecca and I did a full city break day, including a BIG brunch start followed by a lot of walking up and around downtown. Primarily Rebecca was keen visit all the best bookshops in the city (and we did hilariously well in that front). We also popped into a board game place and grabbed some coffee and doughnuts. We've now rode on streetcars and subways and I'm starting to refer to roads by their street names confidently. Any longer here and people will think I'm a local!

Autumn in Algonquin

Our host very generously elected to drive me and Rebecca out to Algonquin to see the wilderness and the leaves changing colour. We drove out of the city and took a lengthy hike around a gorgeous lake, all while admiring the autumnal colours of the leaves, all Halloween orange and chimney red. We were out of town for literally the entire day, nice to breathe the super fresh air and get a sense of Canada's country.

First Thanksgiving

Our first true day in Canada started with a bowl of very English porridge - just enough to set us up for a long old day of walking across town. We caught the streetcar to a nearby park then hiked to the downtown area. In Toronto it's remarkable how quickly the landscape goes from suburbia into fringe shopping districts into mega city - our walk took us across all three and eventually to the base of the CN Tower.

Rebecca especially was still fending off the remainder of jet lag today so it was nice to do a cursory sweep of the city without building our day around any major activity. There was one thing we simply had to do while in Canada... visit a Tim Hortons. As the tiredness hit a coffee and a doughnut really picked us back up again.

We did need to return to our host's home though because this weekend marked the beginning of Canadian Thanksgiving. Although the day itself is technically tomorrow, the big meal was planned for today. We met up with my extended family plus a few other satellite friends, all local Torinotonians who were great company. We exchanged differences in ways of life, politics and food while scoffing turkey meat and red wine. My favorite thing was helping prepare a small side for the Thanksgiving meal while hanging around others all chipping in to help make the meal something special. Though I was 1,000 miles away from home, I was still amongst family and reconnecting with them on a foreign national holiday is an incredibly rare treat.

Never this far away from Home

Boarded my first ever long-haul flight and was left agog at the amenities. Tiny pillow. Tiny blanket. Tiny multimedia screen with a BIG selection of films. We had the time to kill so we got around to the new Indiana Jones and the Mario Bros movie - both very serviceable plane films made all the more fun when Rebecca and I had to synchronize our pressing of the play button so we could watch the films together.

We disembarked in Toronto and met up with my relatives, we hit up a brunch place where I got my first taste of Canadian maple syrup on French toast. We had hopes of stumbling into the city proper but our jet lag hit us hard so we had a power nap instead - ready to hit the day properly tomorrow after a good night's sleep.

7-Shirt Roll

Did the old 7-shirt roll to squeeze in as much as I could into my trusty Cabin Maxx bag. It might actually be the nicest I've ever packed a bag like this, it was almost a shame to disrupt it all when I went rummaging around for my toothbrush tonight.

The house is spic and span, the cat is fully fed and everything has been put into a state of stasis. It'll all be there when we're back but it always is a little bittersweet saying goodbye to a home, even if it's before going on a major holiday. Our flight to Canada leaves early so our alarms are set to 'even earlier'.

Show me the CAD!

My beloved caddy van got collected by a stranger from the hire company. My car keys feel smaller once again, but our parking space has never looked so spacious. Hope they don't mind the pint of vegan curry I spilt in the back, I honestly scrubbed and scrubbed but the smell continues to linger. I used Rebecca's car for most of our runs today, mostly to go out and get Canadian dollars. I wish their cash was a little more fun, it's just more plastic bank notes nowadays, still featuring our noble Queen in some cases. All that's left to do tomorrow is to leave the house in a good state.

Oh yes, and to pack my bag. Can't forget that.

Project A

Holed up indoors to enjoy a fully fledged day off. I completed my new game, finished reading my book and squeezed in a Jackie Chan movie. Project A is pretty goofy in all the right ways and it constantly wears it's silent films influences on its sleeve. The plot is disjointed as anything, but I'm grateful for anything that facilities context for an immaculately choreographed fight scene. No one but Jackie can round up an insane number of humans and ask them if they want to get hurt on camera. The speed of the fights and the spectical of it all is occasionally dizzying, but the films feathers are somewhat clipped by its overly wacky comedy.

Tiny Plastic

Now that I"m once again a man of leisure, I have the freedom to do whatever I want during the day... Including going over to a friend's house to do imaginary sci Fi war with tiny bits of plastic. I played my first ever game of Warhammer today, I shan't be making a habit of it but it was a lot more beginner friendly than I was anticipating. I got more pleasure out of admiring our friendships deftness with a paintbrush, his miniatures were so nice I was a little afraid to touch them at times, especially when factoring in their costs.

Got a few more chores to do before Canada later on this week. In my mind it feels like preparing for Christmas and trying to buy all the presents before the big day. Rain or shine, my bag will be packed on Friday and we'll be shipping out on holiday.

Fly Tipper

So, today was my real final day on Rivals. For such a star studded show you'd like to think my last day went out with a bang. Instead I was peeling tape of loading bay floors, and loading up my van with detritus to take to the dump. I said my goodbyes to the lovely folks who help run our studio and bless them, they looked so sad that we were leaving. I sent a few emails once I got home, then shut down my laptop and opened a beer to celebrate the end of an era...

Well I still need to round off a few more tiny jobs, that's the nature of the beast though. I'll smash through it all in a morning and be done with it.

Sunday 1 October 2023

Califlower Cheese

For the first time in ages we went out for a pub roast this Sunday. We agreed to .eet up with some friends at a place quite deep into town, it was actually quite nice to go in the big walk before eating far too much califlower cheese and gravy. Rebecca and I are slowly doing the rounds of seeing a bunch of friends before our big trip to Canada, though we'll only be gone for two weeks I reckon we'll miss the entire Autumn transition back in the UK. We'll return to barren trees and chilly air before we know it. I'm already so ready to wear jumpers and jackets again.

Packing for Canada

With our trip to Canada looming Rebecca used today to coordinate her outfits for the holiday. There was a lot of consulting on my part as we whittled down the mini mountain of clothes, there might end up being some detritus going in my bag now as well. I still need to figure out what is exactly coming with me overseas, I'm mostly looking forward to reading books again, with plenty of travel time I'll try and get plenty of words under my belt. I feel like I'm the kind of person who brings a notebook along with aspirations if doing some creative writing, but I always end up lugging an empty pad... maybe just a small notebook this time...

Farewell Rivals

Fun fact, I listen to 'P.S. Goodbye' and 'Nostalgia' by The Chameleons at the end of every job. Though I technically have one more bonus tidy up day on Monday, today marked the Production Team's final day in Rivals. It's bizarre to think they've been my colleagues for 10 months now, but it feels like yesterday when we all walked it, picked a desk and set up our laptops down. I keep getting flashbacks to prep and driving to the offices through the snow while we all navigated our new roles. Fast forward to now and we're all better people, more confident in our own skin and in our abilities. I passed on my wrap gifts and cards to everyone and only made a few people well up with my words. We packed down the offices, swept everything off our desks and left it just as we found it - as if nothing ever happened.

Lot of good memories on this job, that office will forever home a lot of happy thoughts and good vibes. Come Monday a part of me will miss it greatly.

Slap Up Meal

I was about 45 minutes into a big drive first thing this morning when I suddenly realized I forgot to eat breakfast. Thankfully it was our Production Team lunch this afternoon, and since I had been inadvertently fasting I was ready to gorge myself. Scallops, calamari, focaccia, gnocchi, arachini, limonchello and affogato, we had a banquet! So much so I don't think I'll need breakfast tomorrow now!

One last push for the wrap in the show tomorrow. I'll be driving up and around London all day doing returns, hopefully I won't miss any of the good vibes, but deep down I'm glad I won't be around to pack down the kitchen.

Hand Double

Forgot how ropey an early wake up call was, but that's the magic of working in TV. It was our one and only pick up day, most of the crew were called in for one last rodeo up in a regular location of ours and it felt like coming home. They added in an extra scene too which they required a hand double for so I dove in front of camera once again to save the day to the amusement of my team. That really, really was a full on wrap on Rivals now and it went out with a fun little shoot day.

Tuesday 26 September 2023

Accustomed to Customs

There's just a few big jobs left to do in the office, arranging this international freight courier has been the bane if my life recently though. Valuing every individual item, gathering insurance quotes and filling out customs paperwork is miles out of my wheelhouse but I forced myself to sort it all out today and I feel so much better now. The rest of the afternoon was all about getting the final, final day of filming all prepped and ready. I'm going to be doing one more big, nasty early morning and after that I'll be Scott free.

Monday 25 September 2023

Chonky Tiger

With precious few days left on this job it suddenly dawned on me just how much I have to do before I can put my out of office on for good. Most irritatingly I have a consignment of personal belongings that need to head back to America on behalf of a cast member. Because they own a lot of expensive goods we need to get insurance out for them too, and that means itemizing everything they have in their various suitcases. The most hilarious thing we found was a rhinestone clutch handbag in the shape of a chubby tiger. At least it was the funniest thing until it flew out of the suitcase as I attempted to pack it, flinging itself at full force right at my laptop screen... so now there's a big chink in my device that likely means I'll have to replace the screen. What's an already stressful Monday without a little something more?

Sunday 24 September 2023

State of Sunday

My first and only full weekend day was a hoot. Depending on your state of mind it could have looked like a lot of false starts, Rebecca and I drove up to Cribbs Causeway with a long list of things to get, but we mostly left empty handed. We had a similar experience at IKEA as well, leaving there having spent more on meatballs than furniture. At least it was fun to hang out and take it easy - ready for the final push and last week of work.
